as said in your conclusion, do it in 2D first, and see how the game mechanics work. these are the KEY in an RPG.
you could keep in mind to write code which could be easily convert to 3D i.e. fallout style (tilesets).

realms of arkania f.e. has a good gameplay, as it is flip3d + isometric for battles.

further i don't know flash much, but its limits are obvious (as you say).

for true 3D i would use opengl or sdl or whatever and C++ code of course.

my 2 cents

[...] of Arkania is classic hardcore role-playing, flip3D style intermezzed with isometric combat screens and you can get this for a ridiculous cheap price [...]

Thanks for the kudos Wavinator! Yes, SF themed RPGs are sort of my hobbyhorse. The game I design will also be SF/Space themed (somewhere between Star Wars and Bladerunner if you want so ;) ). I'm not yet sure if I go 3D or not, it all depends on how my platform (Flash) develops in that regard in the near future. For now I'm working on a prototype with really simple top down view so that I can figure out and test the (combat) system, which is going to be a skill-based system btw. Later then I can decide to transfer it all to better visuals.

I'm using Torque Game Builder and have been struggling with this myself. I think I've ceded immersion to the studios producing the AAA titles. It's what they do well and as you note producing assets requires a veritable army. So I've sort of made peace with this by trying to remember all of the cool, innovative things you're more in a position to do when your resources are constrained. You could really excel at tactical combat in either isometric or top down view, for instance, without forcing the user to wrestle with some blasted camera that rotates this way and that.

Anyway, thanks for the article. I mainly wanted to post because I saw your comments on RampantGames about RPGs not all being hack & slash. When I saw your Hard Nova, JA and Fallout screenshots I had to say major points to you! Glad to know someone else out there thinks all RPGs don't have to be set in Medieval Europe to be fun!

[...] Probably yes, with a lot of trickery but who wants to make games that look that outdated? As I mentioned in another post, I’d be better off with well designed 2D [...]
