I’ve been trying Suitcase for a while but finding and activating fonts with it was a major pain in the butt. You had to dig around in the preview list on the right and then to activate the font you once again had to search for the same font in the left side list (all with no mousewheel support).

After I was fed up with Suitcase I went with OT1 fontmanager for quite a while but this manager, while a crapload better than Suitcase, runs a bit unstable and doesn’t support some important formats. It also can only install/uninstall fonts but not activate them temporarily. There are also a ton of other font managing tools out there but almost all I’ve came across so far didn’t fulfill my requirements.

[ad#ad_content_small]These frustrating times are over with MainType! It supports all the common font formats like TrueType, OpenType, Postscript Type 1, Vector and Raster fonts, it has a clean and customizable GUI, it has font groups, fonts can be either installed/uninstalled or only activated temporarily (which is very useful when working on projects that require several fonts to be active, just make a new font group for that project and activate that bunch of fonts for this project), preview text can be changed, theres a palette with the character set, fonts can be stored anywhere on the harddisk etc. etc.

If you fell into despair so far because of the lack of a good font manager then I recommend to give MainType a try. I’m currently using the trial and when it comes to managing fonts on your system this seems to be the best choice currently (unless you prove me wrong and there is an even better tool that slipped my attention).

I’ve bought myself an iPod Shuffle finally after pondering about a couple of mobile players. This device is the second best thing after sliced bread.
I don’t wanna dig to deep in details here so I make it short, here are the pro’s of the iPod Shuffle …

- Excellent sound quality! The included headphones are top notch IMHO and have enough bass that even Drum’n'Bass sounds good on them! The Volume can be cranked up pretty high too.
- 1 GB Memory = ~240 songs and 12 hours listening.
- Compact! One of the real good points on it! I can put it in the small sleeve pocket of my shirt or into the front pocket and jump around and it would not be in the way or annoy.
- Simple use! Only the most necessary functionality is included! Loudness up/down, Play/Pause, next/prev track, fast forward/backward (by holding the skip buttons), normal mode or shuffle play. That’s it and that’s what most people basically ever will need for an unhindered music experience.
- Sound quality is very good! (I said that already but I say it again )

Here the cons:
- iTunes! For me iTunes is one of the most user unfriendly tools ever seen! It runs sluggish and takes ages before you can use it (because it updates all kinds of stuff), it hijacks file types, re-installs Quicktime etc. etc…. all the nasty program! It first copies for whatever reason a selection of tunes from your collection to the iPod. When I start it, it tells me that it updates the iPod but I never tell him he should do that (and it cannot be turned off). After about one hour I was able to finally copy tunes to my iPod Shuffle! Once you have figured it out you can actually start enjoying the iPod which is a cool and useful gadget nevertheless!

As a one-man-game developer of worldclass (exaggeration intended!) it’s good to have a bunch of tools at hand that help with the tasks for creating games! In this series I will introduce helpful ‘nice to have’ or even ‘must have’ tools that make a game developers/designers day easier. In this part I will cover Alias SketchBook Pro …

I’ve bought myself a periphery some days ago about which I was pondering to buy for a long time already, a Wacom Intuos 3 graphics tablet! I choose the smallest version 4×5 since I’m not a drawing pro and have limited desktop real estate and the smallest one suffices pretty well for just some sketching.

[ad#ad_content]While it’s cool to use it in Adobe Photoshop, it becomes a great pleasure to use it together with Alias SketchBook Pro, an application which is made especially for use with a graphics tablet. SketchBook is the next closest thing to a real paper sketchbook! The program doesn’t offer the multitude of features like an app of the Photoshop scale but it offers excellent and quickly accessible tools to sketch around on a virtual canvas without any hassle.

All the tools can easily be controlled without ever grabbing the mouse or keyboard and the small Alias patented ‘Marking menu’ in the corner is outstandingly intuitive. The only moment where you ever have to use the keyboard is to enter filenames or brush names when creating a new custom brush. And how you will be able to create new brushes! You can customize brushes, pens and erasers of all kinds of sizes, pressure sensitiveness, roundness, slanting, opacity and whatnot by yourself. There is almost no limit! Another nice feature is to load a template, for example grid paper into the background layer and even save own images as new templates in TIFF format.

For a graphics tablet usage I haven’t come across anything better yet than Alias SketchBook Pro! The price is quite high for such an application if you think about it that you actually only need a simple paper block and a pencil to do the same in an old fashioned way but SketchBook is such a smooth experience that I simply have to recommend it and there is a trial version downloadable from Alias’ website too so it’s worth a try for people with a graphics tablet.

We’ve been to her majesty’s sisters house in Koga the last weekend which is around 1h from Tokyo and spent a lazy Saturday/Sunday there and mostly played games on the GBA and PS2 of my niece in law which convinced me enough to buy a Gameboy again and so I’ve went to buy a black GBA SP last week. A great yield!

My favorite GBA game of the moment for it is GT3 Advance Pro Concept Racing! This game means a lot of racing fun on the Gameboy! The track design isn’t really 3D but uses mode7 which means it is rather a flat plane with the track on it and several obstacle sprites on it but IMHO looks better than the clumsy graphics of Collin McRae Rally.

The gameplay is almost as fun as it was with GT and GT 2 on the good old Playstation and the car design and driving behavior can’t be complained about. You have to master some driving tests before every of the four modes to get a license and you get tuning parts and new cars (overall the game has 97 cars) when winning races, just like in the original GT. The music could be more diverse but is OK while it’s composed using the GBA’s chip sound and the sound effects are very well done and things like the motor noise even change if you use another muffler for your car for example. The track design also is enough diverse and there are day and night tracks as well as different weather conditions. You can save your game (and cars) every time which is a feature that was missing in earlier GT versions for the GBA.

The game is fair enough to proceed with not too many attempts. Often it only depends on which car you are using for a special track. The car stats actually only consist of handling, top speed and acceleration which is too few IMHO. There should be more stats like on the PS versions and I wish the devs would have put some information about if the car is a front wheel, back wheel or 4×4 drive. For now you can only guess this unless you know that the real car has it.

However this doesn’t limit the gaming fun too much and I can strongly recommend the game to everyone who likes car racing games. I would say it’s currently the best available racing game for the GBA.

Review: Sentinel Worlds 1: Future Magic (DOS/C64)

One of my very favorite games back on Amiga was the space RPG Hard Nova (to be reviewed in a while) which took me long cozy winter nights to solve. The predecessor of Hard Nova was a game called Sentinel Worlds 1: Future Magic which was released in 1988 by Electronic Arts and had it’s success under science fiction RPG videogamers. Me – PC-less – always looked enviously over to the PC crowd. But that only until decent DOS Emulators were developed, like DOSBox.

A cozy bedroom on a cozy yacht ... with a cozy surprise.

In the year 2996 the government of the Caldorre system is seriously concerned about tradeships who want to approach the four planets who are getting attacked by space pirates. A whole fleet of defense ships is being ordered to stop the pirates and you have to control five crew members to care for peace around the system. Sounds like a shoot’em’up but it’s actually a space roleplay game with neat EGA (16 colors) graphics and sound which isn’t too bad for an early DOS game. Until around this time generally only fantasy roleplay games were popular and solely. That had to be changed from now on with this great game!

Arnold, err, Bnold is also on the party.

Your crew consists of a pilot, a navigator, a communication officer, an engineer and a medic. Everyone of them has special skills which can be improved during the game. You can buy new equipment and weapons at shops and fight enemies on the planet surfaces or fight in space with your ship and it’s even possible to enter other ships. There are four planets which can be orbited and where you can land on and drive around with a special terrain vehicle. In many buildings you meet NPC’s to whom you can talk to. It’s also possible to search for minerals and sell them or to improve your ships systems. Shortly said you have to collect information and solve quests to get into the secret behind the space pirates.

With our ATV we meander over the planet surfaces.

While Future Magic’s graphics only really looked so colorful on PC’s with EGA cards, nowadays such hardware of course is long forgotten and most old DOS games even doesn’t run anymore in a DOS prompt on Win2k/XP. Therefore the more lucky it is to see some decent emulation developments recently that make playing abandonware DOS games no lesser fun on recent OS systems. As mentioned before one such DOS emulator is the highly praised DOSBox which in it’s most recent version now even supports XMS and EMS and thus games like Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games can be emulated.

After the DOS version another version of Future Magic was released for the good old C64 which doesn’t need to hide at all behind it’s DOS cognate. The C64 graphics looking almost as fresh as on the PC and the gameplay is still acceptable, well except for the floppy disk changing.

The C64 version ...

The games half title is Sentinel Worlds 1 which let’s one come to think there are more parts of the series but unfortunately for some reason the creators doesn’t developed a second part but published the famous Hard Nova which could be seen as the sequel to this game and though with a different story and improved graphics it has the similar engine and gameplay. I’m going to review Hard Nova later so check back in a while for it.

... looks nice as well.

As a conclusion I can say that playing this game now after a while it’s even more fun than many modern up-to-date RPG or adventure games and I can only recommend anyone who’s into such type of game to snoop into it. That means check your local dealer (abandonware sites like The Underdogs) for the game. I don’t think you will get the game anywhere now except for the second hand market or auctions. The C64 version fixed for emulators is here (with kind regards of the makers of Girls of 64).

Review: Star Wars Galaxies (PC)First of all I’m not that far yet and played this game now for one week so you will not get any too detailed information about it here. I’ve spent most of the recent days training my character in the Tyrena area on Corellia an finally got my pistol skill tree full being able to call myself a pistol apprentice. I thought I would be able to hop right on the novice smugglers skill trees but to my surprise I still have to get some more skill points in at least pistol ranged combat before I can do that.

I’ve started off with an artisan and did the tedious task of surveying and sampling ore, minerals and chemicals for a long time with the intention to manufacture my own (better) weapons, since these seem to be very rare (at least on the Chilastra server?!), even bought and planted some personal mineral extractors later but got bored with it and decided to get onto the adventurous side with the rebels. Gladly I’ve already worked my pistol skills up a lot to that time. So after doing rebel delivery and destroy missions until I’ve got 200 rebel faction points to join them and hanging around on Corellia for almost one week I’ve decided it’s time to take a flight to Tatooine.

Shortly after I arrived in Mos Espa, I’ve grouped with a Trandoshan and a Bothan who asked me to join to raid Fort Tusken which lies close to that area. Three persons are way to few to raid the Tuskens but we thought to find others on that location to team up.

We found two more peeps to join up the team, however 5 were still too few! Suddenly somebody aggroed one of the Tusken leaders out of their stronghold and the shooting began. I’ve tried my best in evading and shooting at him but before he fell it was me who got incapped and after that slained by that sucker.

Fishing on Naboo.

The outer rim is really the outer rim!

Now I’m hanging in a distant small spot named Wayfar where not even a shuttle port exists. After running about 4 kilometers through the sand storm plagued desert I arrived there to make that ‘Jabba Quest’ to get access to Jabba’s palace which is close to that area.

A Wookie asked me to join a group to invade a nest of imperials close to that town. So after some minutes we where in a hot PvP fight with several imperialists which was fun and I even killed 2 or 3 of them before I got slain again and were cloned in the next cloning station in Wayfar.

Currently I’m still chewing on Jabba’s quests and I’m halfway through.

Technicals:

The game visuals are amazing and I realized I need new parts for my PC! That means new gfx card, new CPU, new motherboard and new RAM! Darn, my machine is outdated again!

I’m currently playing on a AMD Tbird 1.2Ghz, 512Mb RAM and a Geforce II MX400 card with 64MB. It’s still ok to play with this gear and most time the game runs ok… unless the mem reach the upper hilt and accesses the swapfile and then it can get into a slideshow for a short moment.

On Dathomir, the gloomy planet.

My gfx card is outdated! I had to screw all details down but while far objects aren’t rendered and popping up, the closer surrounding still look nice. Water only looks like a boring pad here and I just saw on a screenshot from Lucasarts how realistic water actually looks with a decent gfx card.

Please Lucasarts/SOE, include an option to turn off the rotating animation of objects in the inventory and slotbar! Everytime I open the inv with many objects inside, my framerate drops down to 8 and below.

The game still has many bugs, like the notorious ‘beam bug’ which repositions your character suddenly some meters away from your current position. Yesterday I got stuck in a room and couldn’t get out again. I’ve tried the /eject command, nothing happened. Only after I re-connected the game, I could evade there.

However these bugs are minor compared to the fun that the game provides and SOE/Lucasarts working on updates and so the game get’s an automatic update almost every week (which is installed at the launchpad before the game is started).

Say hi to my new Dewback.

Small hint for Firewall users here: I’m using Zonealarm and after the game is updated I have to set access authentication for the game exe’s in Zonealarm again. Meaning that the SWG client is allowed to access through other components as well. Otherwise the game will get stuck while loading it.

Not sure tho how it behaves with other Firewalls but might be the same case.

The planetary area is huge! Approx. 15 square kilometers makes a walk from one side to the other taking hours! … Besides that you will run into several dangerous enemies/beasts during that so just toggling run and watch your character running through will not be successful for long!

There’s no ‘area wrapping’. I guess Lucasarts/SOE wants to keep the possibility open to extend the playing area later.

The game has much potential and open end! I only scratched the surface yet. Besides many professions and hybrid professions I’ve heard it’s also possible to become a Jedi though it might be a very difficult and lengthy task.

Per pedes to Mos Eisley.

A ‘Space Extension’ is planned for 2004 and I really can’t await to buy a neat vessel for my smuggler char and step into the footprints of Han Solo! But until that, we have to bear without flying own spaceships. Some free upgrades are in the starting holes however like a ‘ground vehicle’ upgrade. So finally you are able to buy and use landspeeders and swoop bikes at least. And also it should be possible soon to ride some of the pets, for example a Dewback or Bantha.

SOE charges currently ~15$ per month for tha game which sounds high but is understandable when keeping in mind that they setted up several server farms to run the game on and maintenance costs are high. Currently there’s no way around a credit card or more expensive gametimecodes from third party offerers but SOE announced that game cards also will be available soon.

Until then, hope to see you somewhere in the galaxy!

Review: Tomb Raider – The Angel Of Darkness (PC)

Lara's back ... in 5000 Polygons.

As an old Tomb Raider player who digged through the vaults of the Tomb Raider series from the beginning on the Playstation, I got myself to give the newly just released Tomb Raider – The Angel Of Darkness in that Lara has to solve mysteries that will brighten up why her former mentor got killed after she gave him a visit after that she got suspected and hunted for the murder.

Several years after the last part Tomb Raider Chronicles was released, the expectation for the new game became high and the big question you might ask is if Core Design managed to bring Lara back in a style that she deserved.

Honestly there are many different opinions about the game. Many love it while others hate it! Both are right as far as I can decide it. Most remarkable thing first: Eidos released an unfinished Game which seems to be still beta. This wouldn’t be too ugly if the bugs were only on the PC version but I’ve heard people complaining about bugs on the Playstation2 version as well. And that can’t easily be patched!

It’s starting with some ‘harmless’ bugs like missing textures on walls and non player models to very annoying and even unfair bugs like when shooting at an enemy, Lara always runs to the opponent and into it, making a fight a pain in the butt.

The Louvre is heavily laser-protected.

There’s also the heavily discussed controls of Lara (and later Curtis) which are very slow and delayed. When you are running and change the direction you will feel a remarkable delay. This can show up in some hefty curses when you are in a fight or a very critical situation.

I know it’s bad to start with the negative points at first but they had to be told! There are also many exciting and good points to the game like the excellent graphics and level design, the top music and sound effects and of course the catching story and the whole atmosphere that builds up during gameplay around Lara.

Lara still manages her moves with elegance.

That leads to either you will get fed up with the controls and bugs very fast and throw the game into the corner or you have enough interest in trying to obtain upcoming areas to see how the story proceeds like me.

The levels vary from one to another and mostly look very well designed. You eventually will agree with this when you entered the Bio Research facility which looks simply fantastic in an early century garden house style with plenty of colorful (and dangerous) plants.

I played TRAOD on a 1.2Ghz AMD with a Geforce2 MX400 gfx card and I still can claim that the graphics looked excellent though I couldn’t even activate many new graphical effects like fog or shadows.

The levels vary a lot. Sometimes confined space, sometimes huge areas.

The story and plot is a lot darker than on the predecessors and so many of the included areas are. Some new features are added like multiple choice dialogue with other NPC’s which should lead to slightly different ways of how to complete a level. In my opinion this was rather useless as the gameplay doesn’t vary much from it. I’d liked to see that the complete plot changes it’s way by choosing different questions/answers and you’ll possibly get different game endings like it already happened years before in Resident Evil for example. Core Design? Hello? … Did the innovations made an arc around you the last couple of years?!

There’s also Lara’s new ability system. She increases in strength on her legs or arms every now and then when she pushes boxes or jumps and climbs and she tells you so while playing with an excellent synced voiceover that counts for all characters in the game (note here: I’ve played the English version).

If you increased in strength you will be able to reach areas or do actions that you weren’t able to do before. This was a nice idea but again I think this could have been more extended. Like more ways of how to improve the strength and more ways to use it. This new feature leaves a rigid taste like it is now. The same goes for the new added sneak feature where Lara gets into a “quiet mode” and can walk along walls, lurk around corners and even break a foe’s neck. Basically this is useless as you can also shoot down all enemy’s meaning there is nothing really changing if you causing alert. They could have at least let more enemies spawn into the area when you got spotted.

That leads me to another critical point of the game: the enemy AI! The AI which isn’t! Generally the enemies are always behaving completely dumb and are no real match. A wheelchair driver is harder to defeat than these enemies!

Lara manages her habitual repertoire on various moves and actions plus some new ones which look always well animated on the new hi-res Lara model. Like there are martial arts kicks and she can now crawl military style on the ground.

The plot thickens.

The puzzles in the game are medium difficulty and don’t get too bothersome. There are only two time limited puzzle scenarios which I can remember now. This is a big relief when remembering how tedious some puzzle have been in older TR parts.

It comes for example like: you stand in front of a huge abyss with some flimsy wooden stems in it over that you have to jump (do they watched too much “The Golden Child” here? … ‘I know you have an excellent floor here!’)

The Bio Research Facility is one of the most impressive levels with it's pompous building style and fantastic botany.

You will think immediately WTH? but after you jumped and maybe died for three or four times you discover that these parts are not as hard as expected. They made a big improvement on such scenes at least!

So I can only really recommend this game to people who are as addicted like me and Tomb Raider fans who want to dig into a tense and sinister raising storyline. All others should better wait until Core Design published enough patches to mangle out all the bugs for the PC version! I wonder how do they want to handle the PS2 version and what caused Core to release this game precociously!

Review: V-Scroll-Shoot’em’ups with MAME

Nothing rocks more for a spontaneous minute fun than playing a session of arcade shoot’em’ups! They always kicked up the limit of graphic power in the eighties and nineties that home computers couldn’t provide! Nowadays someone who collects and eventually owns a room full of arcade machines could count himself to the happy ones owning these oversized piggy banks! But with a PC or Mac and a recent version of MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) there’s nothing in the way for some fast paced fun!For this reason I’m going to introduce some of my favorite Shoot’em’ups here …

Gunbird

This game is definitely one of the more popular ones and that not without reason! You can choose from five characters, Ash, Marion, Valnus, Yuan Nang and Tetsu who will fire their way through the enemy packed levels! Everyone of them has their own set of weapons and extra weapons and their own transportation method. So comes that Marion flies on a witch broom and Testu in his wooden helicopter. That’s right, the game theme is somewhat set into a fantasy world but still with high powered hi-tech weaponry included.

The character has to find various parts of an ancient mirror to get access to a secret realm in the later parts of the game. That’s nothing to worry about as this is just part of the story and happens automatically.

The content of the game is just firing against enemies and firing again, just how it belongs for a stable shoot’em’up! The villains are a troop that appears at the end of each level as the boss fight in huge machinery.

The graphics are upper average for a game from 94 and the sprites can become very plenty and screen filling at times. The gameplay stays fair in terms of bullet count on the screen compared to other shooters and the music adds the right arcade feel to the game which means it puts a good pastime atmosphere on top of it. The japanese version of the game is somewhat harder than the world release as it always starts from the level beginning again when a credit was used after a demise while the world version continues right at the last location in the level.

I can recommend this game to anyone who wants to take a closer look on arcade shoot’em’ups!

Armed Police Batrider

APB is one of these games I call shooter orgy! There’s hardly ever one moment where the screen isn’t filled with enemies and bullets. That makes this game one of the nore hectic ones. Overall the game isn’t very long but rather difficult because of the heavy hostile fire. But luckily your fighter can take several hits before it blasts him into oblivion.

The graphics are very good again and the sound is more a heavy metal theme mixed with typical arcade style music. Weapon powerups can be collected all over the time and the weapons get very huge power after a short while which makes the gameplay more addicting.

You can select a player team at the beginning depending on the mode that you choose and each pilot has it’s own weapons style.

Overall this game offers a nice and fast paced action for a short while with three difficulty degrees.

Arcade feel with screen flip

All of these v-scrollers make an extra fun with vertically turned monitor screen! MAME supports to flip the screen to vertical so if you flip your monitor also you will get a larger screen field for the game, just like on arcade machines.

I’ve tried it several times and this feature adds alot of arcade feel to your computer in your living room! However if you don’t own a second screen it can get bothersome soon to turn the screen always upright and back again. I suggest you should try it at least once to get a taste of the big difference that it makes. Useful here if your screen got a degauss function.

DoDonPachi

This game offers the highest firepower I’ve seen so far in a shoot’em’up! Mostly the screen is full of yellowish red explosions accompanied by huge explosion sound fx. The sound fx in this shooter are actually the fattest ones I’ve heard so far as well … maybe not if you’re playing with pc multimedia speakers but on a stereo it sound simply blasting!

As mentioned the screen is full of fire! Your main weapon fires like the hell and if you hold the fire key you’ll get a laser which gets fatter and fatter the more power-ups you collect. With your smart bomb you summon an explosion and turn all current bullets on the screen into bonus points. This is especially useful when fighting against one of these nasty bosses who will fill up the screen!

This game will keep you seriously at the screen for some time with it’s massive sound fx and explosions!

… These were three of my favorite shooters though there are more which I like to play, for example Cyvern, Change Air Blade, Final Star Force or Lethal Thunder. But I’m hoenstly too lazy now to write about all of them! … Maybe I will on a second part!

If you know any other thrilling shoot’em’ups that are not mentioned here just let me know and drop a short line here and I will have a look on them!

Director Koji Morimoto had the brilliant idea to show a very different view on the Matrix by letting some children in a big city (obviously Tokyo) discover a bug in the Matrix incidentally.

On a sunny day Yoko’s cat doesn’t appear to her breakfast which she usually never omits. So the girl goes asking some kids if they saw the cat around and they decide to trespass to that ‘forbidden’ plat in the neighborhood. Things there run completely paradox! It’s raining through the ceiling from the sky where no clouds are and by jumping from the roof you start floating in the air.

The kids have some very fascinating moments on the site before actually the ‘agents’ arrive with a ‘debugging’-command … because … you might have guessed it, nothing stays unobserved in the Matrix by them for long.

This little insight on a day of living in the Matrix hasn’t much to do anymore with the Matrix movies like some of the other Animatrix episodes. Completely uninfluenced shows it the adventurous kids encountering something normally impossible while they don’t loose much words about the ‘how’ and ‘why’.

The movie offers some very lovely and dreamy scenes for example when a dove flies by in slow motion and Yoko’s dropping slowly to the ground. There’s also a view into what seems to be the ‘void’, a big – if not endless – pitch black room … I’d rather don’t step into it!

After the ‘debuggers’ disappeared again, everything’s getting normal and boring again! The spirit of the strange building is gone.

I’ve read some people’s review on The Animatrix™ somewhere else who were disappointed and gave it a very lousy grade. I can only guess that they are too ‘fixed’ on the Matrix movies and expected something more close to the Matrix(tm) movies. But IMHO exactly this is what is exciting about the Animatrix movies, that they are showing very own stories and different approaches on the Matrix universe like Beyond is doing it in an extreme way.

Review: Project Firestart (C64)

We enter!

Time for another classic game review: today it’s one of my very favorites back on the C64, the space horror action adventure Project Firestart!
It was back in July 1989 when I was reading the game review of PF in the cult and now abandoned German game magazine Power Play written by Michael Hengst, I was instantly hooked and had to buy the game!

Let me tell you that the game’s pixel blood level is very high. The story is about a research ship near Saturn that doesn’t answer anymore on the space radio. So you jump into your fashionable green lined bodysuit to be sent to the ship to look if everything is OK.

Just a storage room!

Shortly after entering the ship you will encounter the first splattered corpse which shows up in a very shocking atmospheric scene. The developers managed to get a lot of claustrophobic feel into the game design and to me this game still causes shudders on my back when I play it. It’s like this ‘you don’t know behind which corner the next alien jumps onto you’-feel!

... what the??!

Truly the atmosphere on the vessel with all it’s corridors and lifts and it’s complex structure is very dense! You have to run half through the ship to the terrarium support room to do something there to get on in another part of the ship! While that of course crossing a lot of mean monsters. And weaponry is very few what makes the mission a hard challenge!

The plot thickens

In the firestart labs.

While the Gameplay proceeds, the plot of the story takes it’s branches. So you are going to find out that there are some survivors, a woman in Cryo sleep and a villain agent who is making things more tricky. Not to mention about a super alien breed that starts to slip from his egg soon.

You have to think actually how to get rid of that beast because it cannot be killed by usual weapons. But there are some areas on the ship to lure the creature into. You know extreme radiation or cold are not very healthy!

The Cryo Chamber is being breached by a creature. About time to rescue the damsel in distress.

There are a lot of things to take care of before you can leave. I don’t want to spoil it for ya but you can’t get back, the way you came along! And will you rescue that chick in the cryo chamber or not? It’s up to you! Yes this game already offered some more non-linear plot!

Let me calm you down a bit! Until the game ended you kill the beasts, save the girl, blow up the ship and payback the villain! ….. well unless you didn’t became tripped fodder in between!

Corpses are paving your way!

The game graphics are great for their year and the dramatic music adds a frightening mood! There are several rooms to discover on the ship, some of them which I still wasn’t able to enter because I got killed immediately … perhaps that one special room ends always up in a kill scene then?!?
One minus thing about the game to mention is the slow disk loader and the floppy DJ’ing, but then again a C64 emulator with speed-up option becomes magic!
